This lively memoir by Linda Powell takes us from the swinging 60s to the present day. We hear of her challenges, successes and escapades over this 50-year period and we meet some inspirational people who are doing extraordinary things to improve the lives of others and to create a better world. Their stories deserve to be told. Linda was described by The Times newspaper as “humorous and unassuming” and her story starts in Jamaica, where she worked as a volunteer teacher. From there we travel to Haiti, the United States of America, the East End of London, Eastern Europe, Africa, Central America, India and Cambodia. Her narratives range from humorous and entertaining to moving and heart-wrenching. They weave together to form a personal portrait of a life spent learning from passionate, motivational people. Throughout, we are presented with a clear picture of the political situation of the day and its impact on Linda and those around her. Among her wide range of experiences, we hear about her role as a teacher and headteacher in large secondary schools in London; her voluntary work in Jamaica, South Africa, Ghana and Uganda; her direct action against injustice; and her tangles with the military in a number of countries. This book is a tribute to human-kind, a social history of the time, and an amusing and informative read for all who enjoy travel. All proceeds from the sale of this book will go directly to three charity organisations concerned with empowering girls and women and improving the provision of education in Africa and South East Asia. Details about these organisations are given on the final page of the book.

Escaping his ghosts, AIDS widower David Masiello accepts a one-year position at a Western medical clinic in Beijing. Lonely but excited, he sets out to explore the city—both its bustling street life and its clandestine gay subculture. David chronicles his adventures in China as he wrestles with cultural dislocation, loneliness, and sexual and spiritual longing. After a series of both comic and poignant encounters with gay Chinese men, he meets Bosheng, a handsome young artist. Though the attraction is strong, a difficult courtship ensues, during which Bosheng returns to his ancestral village to marry the girl his parents have chosen for him. Eventually, and quite unexpectedly, David and Bosheng reconnect and share an idyllic spring together. As the year ends, David must decide whether to say goodbye or face the uncertainties of a long-distance relationship. Gambone’s novel is peopled with a host of wonderfully memorable characters: Owen, David’s forthright best friend back home; Auntie Chen, the clinic’s office mom, who wants to fix David up with a girlfriend; Stewart, David’s Beijing roommate, a graduate student doing research on Peking opera; Jiantao and Guoyang, two lovers who lecture David on the fleeting quality of American romance; and Tyson, the Australian doctor with a Chinese girlfriend, who hopes to teach David that love doesn’t need any explanations or justifications.

I invite you to read my book of poetry. It was written to reach out to loved ones, family and friends, even strangers at the time. Everyone has pain and suffering and sorrow at some time in their lives. Some deal with it with prayers, finding comfort with others, or some in anger. Each poem that I wrote was for that person and written from my heart. I have written poems of death, birth, funerals, weddings, divorces, birthdays, baptisms, special holidays, and sentimental/memories. As I wrote poems about death, I came to realize that life does go on after death, that death only removes the body, not the soul or our memories. Every poem I wrote, before writing them, I sat in quiet time with God, asking him to help me choose my words, giving me inner feelings of that person. I felt this was a given gift to me from God and my way of reaching out to others. I put no periods at the end of my writings as I want them to continue, to go on and on. I thank you for reading my book of poems. I am honored and I pray and hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.

"Gentle River Flow" is a collection of writings, from the sublime to the seeming mundane. Essays on the subject of truth are juxtaposed with writings of an experience driving through a desert storm, letters written to a friend on the subject of the origins of Christianity and brief articles written about the experience of star gazing. Further essays are about UFOs and on the experience of a past life regression. Additional subjects include writings on writers' block, God-Talk, dreams, numerology, the human as a divine being, and stories about a stranger who reappears after a twenty year absence to help with a new aspect of a spiritual journey. The finished book offers the word picture of a river. There are places where the eddies are quite rough, and there are quiet pools where the water flows ever so gently. This is a book for casual reading and serious study containing many levels of awareness. "Gentle River Flow" is for the on-going spiritual journey and the expansion of human consciousness.

Or can it? As Dixie struggles with her problems, life brings her face to face with herself and with God. A poignant story of hopes, heartbreaks, growing up, and discovering what really matters in life. A Dublin single mom yearns for her lost youth—but living in the past may threaten her future . . . Single mother Jacqueline Joyce spent her twenties partying while the rest of her friends settled into careers. Now, living in a tiny apartment and working in a dead-end job, she’s still haunted by disappointments and regrets. She basks in old memories of listening to Thin Lizzy and Supertramp, and wonders why things went wrong with drug-addled Matt, the first boy she ever slept with. When she runs into Matt one day, she thinks it must be destiny. It doesn’t matter if he’s married with kids. It doesn’t matter if she drinks a bit too much and has put on some weight. This could be her second chance at happiness. When he invites her to attend an evening class he teaches, her hopes soar to new heights. But while she is indeed about to begin a life-changing journey, it’s not the one she had in mind . . . From an author whose work has been called “rich with Irish humour and universal truths,” this is a compelling story of one woman’s search for the life she wants—and what she learns about herself along the way (Cathy Kelly, author of The Year that Changed Everything on Skin Deep).
