When Washington Was In Vogue

by Edward Christopher Williams, When Washington Was In Vogue Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download When Washington Was In Vogue books, Nearly lost after its anonymous publication in 1926 and only recently rediscovered, When Washington Was in Vogue is an acclaimed love story written and set during the Harlem Renaissance. When bobbed-hair flappers were in vogue and Harlem was hopping, Washington, D.C., did its share of roaring, too. Davy Carr, a veteran of the Great War and a new arrival in the nation's capital, is welcomed into the drawing rooms of the city's Black elite. Through letters, Davy regales an old friend in Harlem with his impressions of race, politics, and the state of Black America as well as his own experiences as an old-fashioned bachelor adrift in a world of alluring modern women -- including sassy, dark-skinned Caroline. With an introduction by Adam McKible and commentary by Emily Bernard, this novel, a timeless love story wonderfully enriched with the drama and style of one of the most hopeful moments in African American history, is as "delightful as it is significant" (Essence).

Alain Locke

by Christopher Buck, Alain Locke Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Alain Locke books, Alain Locke was one of the leading African American intellectuals of his day. Best known as the father of the Harlem Renaissance - the mastermind behind the explosion of black music, literature, and art during the 1920s and 1930s that centered in New York - he also pioneered calls for multicultural democracy and cultural pluralism, tirelessly demanding that America make good on its promises of interracial equality. Locke became a Baha'i in 1918, and remained a believer until his death. While his contributions to African American history have been widely appreciated, Locke's commitment to the Baha'i Faith is not widely known or understood. Here is the first and only serious, scholarly study of Locke's identity and commitment as a Baha'i. The book provides exhaustive evidence of Locke's conversion; his two pilgrimages to the Baha'i Shrines in the Holy Land; his correspondence with Shoghi Effendi Rabbani, then Guardian of the Baha'i Faith; and his years of estrangement from the Washington, D.C., Baha'i community. Beyond this, the book explores Locke's ideas of "spiritual democracy" and demonstrates how the Baha'i principles of the unity of humanity and "unity in diversity" influenced Locke's thinking - and how Locke also left his mark on Baha'i ideals.

Playing The Numbers

by Shane White, Playing The Numbers Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Playing The Numbers books, The most ubiquitous feature of Harlem life between the world wars was the game of "numbers." Thousands of wagers, usually of a dime or less, would be placed on a daily number derived from U.S. bank statistics. The rewards of "hitting the number," a 600-to-1 payoff, tempted the ordinary men and women of the Black Metropolis with the chimera of the good life. This book tells the story of this illegal form of gambling and the central role it played in the lives of African Americans who flooded into Harlem in the wake of World War I. For a dozen years the "numbers game" was one of America's rare black-owned businesses, turning over tens of millions of dollars every year. The most successful "bankers" were known as Black Kings and Queens, and they lived royally. Yet the very success of "bankers" like Stephanie St. Clair and Casper Holstein attracted Dutch Schultz, Lucky Luciano, and organized crime to the game. By the late 1930s, most of the profits were being siphoned out of Harlem.
