Telling Adapting And Performing Personal Stories

by Erica Rosenfeld Halverson, Telling Adapting And Performing Personal Stories Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Telling Adapting And Performing Personal Stories books, The purpose of this study is to understand the process of telling, adapting, and performing personal stories as a venue for adolescent identity exploration within the context of a complex literacy practice. I aim to understand how narrative and performance-based learning environments facilitate the exploration and construction of positive identities for youth who experience stigma in their lives as they move through adolescence. The study chronicles a two-year qualitative case study of the About Face Youth Theatre (AFYT), a narrative-performance organization that works with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth, a population of marginalized youth that is currently understudied and under-resourced, to tell, adapt, and perform the stories of their own lives. I use theories of queer youth identity development to understand the identity development challenges specific to this population of youth. These challenges, including managing a stigmatized identity, identity disclosure, and externally imposed assumptions about adolescent sexual identity, emerged through narrative analysis as the primary themes that AFYT youth explored in their storytelling-adaptation-performance process. I use discourse analysis to document the way that groups of youth use the adaptation process---through the complex practice of re-representing oral stories as scenes for performance---as an occasion to develop ideas about individual and community sexual identities. I also employ these same narrative and discourse analysis methodologies to document the change in one personal narrative from original telling to final performance as well as the original teller's changing relationship to her story. This research demonstrates the way an organized performance-based learning process can facilitate the exploration of positive identities, particularly for youth who must learn to manage stigma in their lives. In understanding the work of AFYT, I am able to reframe issues of identity development as a positive outcome for youth who participate in the organizational process rather than as an inevitable opposition between personal and institutional identities. This notion of positive identity development points to how learning scientists can use performance-based learning environments to address the critical developmental tasks for marginalized youth and incorporate issues of diversity and identity into a research agenda aimed at reaching all students.
