The Continuity Of Wittgenstein S Thought

by John Koethe, The Continuity Of Wittgenstein S Thought Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Continuity Of Wittgenstein S Thought books, Ludwig Wittgenstein's philosophical work is informed throughout by a particular broad theme: that the semantic and mentalistic attributes of language and human life are shown by verbal and nonverbal conduct, but that they resist incorporation into the domain of the straightforwardly factual. So argues John Koethe, in contrast to the standard view that Wittgenstein's earlier and later philosophical positions are sharply opposed. According to the received view, Wittgenstein's thinking underwent a radical transformation after the Tractatus, leading him to abandon classical realism and to develop an alternative semantics based on the notion of warranted assertability. Koethe maintains that the thesis that semantic claims are not made true by any facts whatsoever, which was a central part of Wittgenstein's early theory of elementary propositions, was one he continued to develop in his later writings, and that it is perfectly compatible with classical realism. In making his case for the essential continuity of Wittgenstein's thought, Koethe ranges over the entire corpus of the philosopher's writing, and concludes by pointing out connections between Wittgenstein's views and those of several contemporary philosophers, including Nagel, Dennett, Davidson, and Dummett.

by Rudolf Haller, Wittgenstein Eine Neubewertung Wittgenstein Towards A Re Evaluation Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Wittgenstein Eine Neubewertung Wittgenstein Towards A Re Evaluation books, An läßlich der I 00. In Sprachspiele Verstrickt Oder Wie Man Der Fliege Den Ausweg Zeigt

by Stefan Tolksdorf, In Sprachspiele Verstrickt Oder Wie Man Der Fliege Den Ausweg Zeigt Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download In Sprachspiele Verstrickt Oder Wie Man Der Fliege Den Ausweg Zeigt books, Wittgenstein’s concept of a “language game” brings out how knowledge and ability are interwoven. Human actions are distinguished by their entanglement in a language game ‑ they derive their horizon of meaning through the interplay of linguistic and non-linguistic activities. The present volume is dedicated to the work of Hans Julius Schneider emphasizing the interaction between knowledge and know-how in various areas. In addition to examining the roots of the concept of a language game, the author investigates mental and religious language games.

Wittgenstein S Thought In Transition

by Dale Jacquette, Wittgenstein S Thought In Transition Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Wittgenstein S Thought In Transition books, Wittgenstein's Thought in Transition offers a detailed exposition of Wittgenstein's philosophy as a continuous engagement with a single set of problems. Dale Jacquette argues that the key to understanding the transition in Wittgenstein's thought is his 1929 essay "Some Remarks on Logical Form," which is reprinted in this book. Wittgenstein disowned the essay, then came to see its failure as refuting his early theory altogether and began to investigate the requirements of meaning with a new method that resulted in the characteristic innovations of his later period.

Ludwig Wittgenstein Half Truths And One And A Half Truths

by Jaakko Hintikka, Ludwig Wittgenstein Half Truths And One And A Half Truths Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Ludwig Wittgenstein Half Truths And One And A Half Truths books, IF WITI'GENSTEIN COULD TALK, COULD WE UNDERSTAND HIM? Perusing the secondary literature on Wittgenstein, I have frequently experienced a perfect Brechtean Entfremdungseffekt. This is interesting, I have felt like saying when reading books and papers on Wittgenstein, but who is the writer talking about? Certainly not Ludwig Wittgenstein the actual person who wrote his books and notebooks and whom I happened to meet. Why is there this strange gap between the ideas of the actual philosopher and the musings of his interpreters? Wittgenstein is talking to us through the posthumous publication of his writings. Why don't philosophers understand what he is saying? A partial reason is outlined in the first essay of this volume. Wittgenstein was far too impatient to explain in his books and book drafts what his problems were, what it was that he was trying to get clear about. He was even too impatient to explain in full his earlier solutions, often merely referring to them casually as it were in a shorthand notation. For one important instance, in The Brown Book, Wittgenstein had explained in some detail what name-object relationships amount to in his view. There he offers both an explanation of what his problem is and an account of his own view illustrated by means of specific examples of language-games. But when he raises the same question again in Philosophical Investigations I, sec.

The Fall Of Language

by Alexander Stern, The Fall Of Language Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Fall Of Language books, This book explores the nature of meaning, primarily through readings of the work of Walter Benjamin and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Alexander Stern offers a critical analysis of Benjamin's philosophy of language, finding in it a common root with Wittgenstein's thought on language, and traces the historical foundation of both accounts of meaning to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century German philosophy. Benjamin's theory of language is notoriously dense and obscure. In elucidating it, Stern emphasizes Benjamin's attempt to reorient the Kantian project around language-the medium in which knowledge is expressed-and his concern with the logical understanding of language gaining credence in the work of Bertrand Russell and Gottlob Frege. The result is a radical model of the relationship between language, experience, and the world that sees "absolutely everything" as linguistic in a broadened sense and which sees the logical or designative capacities of language as grounded in an aesthetic foundation. Wittgenstein and Benjamin are read in the book as complementary to one another, sharing comparable critiques of empiricism and comparable accounts of concept use, linguistic understanding, and the relation between experience and language. Although this similarity breaks down over Wittgenstein's account of the "experience of meaning," which is subordinated to his account of meaning as use, Stern argues that Benjamin's theory of language can productively address some unresolved issues in Wittgenstein's understanding of meaning.--
