Based on a notorious clerical scandal in Victorian Ireland, "The Big Chapel" by Thomas Kilroy deals with the indelible essence of humanity and the dangers of adhering to ideological dogma. It is striking in its range, from the anguished interiors of its characters to the rich, panoramic glimpses of the community at large. Nominated for the Booker Prize upon its release in 1971, and winner of several awards, including the Guardian Fiction Prize and the Heinemann Prize, "The Big Chapel" is one of the great Irish novels. Part of the Liberties Revival series, this novel depicts life in an Ireland ensconced in clerical power, and still resonates with the Irish experience today. Thomas Kilroy has written an anatomy of religious, dogmatic violence that remains strikingly relevant. In scenes that range from the private and reflective to the panorama of a whole community in convulsion he draws upon a deep knowledge of the history and folklore of the time and place. While there is a great deal of humor in "The Big Chapel," it is a work of tragic proportions and its array of characters remains with the reader. Father Lannigan, the anguished demagogue haunted by the implications of his own revolution. Master Scully, a man unable to choose at a time when all men are faced by choice. And Horace Percy Butler, landlord and amateur scientist, a tragic comic character who is quite unlike anyone else in Irish fiction whose journal, in itself a remarkable feat of writing, punctuates the novel.

College is a time to learn, explore, and grow, but what does faith have to do with it? In this collection of essays, gifted writers in their twenties and early thirties reflect on their college years by telling stories—some hilarious, some heart-wrenching—on the intersection of faith and college. At a time when so much is written about young adults but not by young adults, this collection allows writers to reveal their college experience in their own voice, sharing, through reflection on their own joys and sorrows, unique insight into students’ experience of college. Themes include negotiating identity, sex and sexuality, discerning the future, studying abroad, and transitions in faith. This collection includes stories from large public universities and small, faith-related colleges. Perfect for faith leaders, college administrators, study groups, young adults, and anyone who loves a college student, Kissing in the Chapel, Praying in the Frat House reveals college struggles that help us reflect on faith and life in college, and forever.

Patrick John Ryan was a Roman Catholic priest, bishop and archbishop in America in very turbulent and challenging times. He experienced the mass influx of European immigrants, anti-foreigner and anti-Catholic prejudice, the American Civil War and efforts to serve the needs of the African Americans and Native Americans. Ireland prepared him for the life he chose to lead. He encountered religious discrimination and the penal-law mentality and he witnessed the Great Famine. Influenced by the accomplishments of Daniel O'Connell, he began to develop his skills as an orator for which he was to gain a world-wide reputation.
