Signal Recovery Techniques for Image and Video Compression and Transmission establishes a bridge between the fields of signal recovery and image and video compression. Traditionally these fields have developed separately because the problems they examined were regarded as very different, and the techniques used appear unrelated. Recently, though, there is growing consent among the research community that the two fields are quite closely related. Indeed, in both fields the objective is to reconstruct the best possible signal from limited information. The field of signal recovery, which is relatively mature, has long been associated with a wealth of powerful mathematical techniques such as Bayesian estimation and the theory of projects onto convex sets (to name just two). This book illustrates for the first time in a complete volume how these techniques can be brought to bear on the very important problems of image and video compression and transmission. Signal Recovery Techniques for Image and Video Compression and Transmission, which is written by leading practitioners in both fields, is one of the first references that addresses this approach and serves as an excellent information source for both researchers and practicing engineers.

Interactive Distributed Multimedia Systems (IDMS) and Protocols for Mul- media Systems (PROMS) have been two successful series of international events bringing together researchers, developers and practitioners from academia and industry in all areas of multimedia systems. These two workshops successfully merged in 2003 and now constitute the MIPS workshop. After the outstanding MIPS 2003 workshop, organized in Naples, Italy, by GiorgioVentreandRobertoCanonico, fromtheUniversityofNaplesFedericoII, MIPS2004movedtoGrenoble,France. Followingthegreattradition,MIPS2004 was intended to contribute to scienti?c, strategic and practical advances in the area of distributed multimedia applications, protocols and intelligent mana- ment tools, with emphasis on their provision over novel network architectures. This is undoubtedly a rather broad area, which is con?rmed by the large range of topics that were addressed in the submitted (and accepted) papers. This year the Call for Papers attracted 74 submissions, essentially from - rope and Asia, plus a few contributions from North America, the Middle East, and Africa, for a total of 20 countries. We would like to express our warmest gratitude to all the authors, without whom organizing this event would have been impossible! Thanks to the outstanding work of the Program Committee and the ad- tional reviewers, 20 full-sized papers and 5 additional short papers were ?nally accepted, which was not an easy task. Like MIPS 2003, MIPS 2004 remained a highly selective event (33% acceptance ratio, including the short papers) which is the best warrant of a good program quality.

Abstract The transmission of digital TV signals to mobile receivers is often error-prone. As most TV broadcasting techniques provide only moderate error robustness, horizontal lines of consecutive image blocks are lost during decoding of the received video signals. In order to ensure high viewing experiences, these lost slices have to be filled by error concealment techniques. However, the reconstruction qualities of classical approaches which exploit spatial, temporal, or spatio-temporal signal correlations are not convincing yet. In the future, mobile TV receivers will support different broadcasting techniques in parallel. As a result, an erroneous high-resolution video signal and a correctly received low-resolution video signal, both representing the same TV service, will often be available. Focusing on the outlined scenario for multi-broadcast reception of digital TV signals, this thesis introduces the novel category of inter-sequence error concealment algorithms. The basic idea is to fill lost slices of the high-resolution video signal by the interpolated low-resolution video signal. Since the images of this reference signal are often cropped and delayed, robust spatio-temporal image alignment is crucial. By including a pixel-based or a feature-based alignment scheme, the proposed concealment algorithms provide excellent visual qualities and outstanding reconstruction qualities of up to 41 dB PSNR. Classical concealment techniques are outperformed by up to 15 dB PSNR. To further enhance the reconstruction quality, several extensions are introduced. First, the alignment robustness and the interpolation quality are increased. Subsequently, a classical temporal approach is incorporated as an alternative concealment mode to cope with low image qualities of the reference signal. Novel aspects include robust mode selection, enhanced motion estimation, and the reconstruction of the displaced frame differences from the reference signal. As a last extension, spatial refinement tackles blurring of concealed image blocks. Missing spectral components are recovered in a frequency selective way based on approximation and extrapolation principles. By combining all relevant extensions, the PSNR gain adds up to 20 dB with respect to classical concealment. Finally, inter-sequence error concealment is adapted to multi-broadcast reception of two erroneous high-resolution video signals. While spatial alignment can be omitted, classical concealment of blocks, being lost in both video signals, and drift compensation in predictively-coded frames are novel aspects. Again, high visual qualities are obtained and classical concealment is outperformed by up to 15 dB PSNR.

Image and video signals require large transmission bandwidth and storage, leading to high costs. The data must be compressed without a loss or with a small loss of quality. Thus, efficient image and video compression algorithms play a significant role in the storage and transmission of data. Image and Video Compression: Fundamentals, Techniques, and Applications explains the major techniques for image and video compression and demonstrates their practical implementation using MATLAB® programs. Designed for students, researchers, and practicing engineers, the book presents both basic principles and real practical applications. In an accessible way, the book covers basic schemes for image and video compression, including lossless techniques and wavelet- and vector quantization-based image compression and digital video compression. The MATLAB programs enable readers to gain hands-on experience with the techniques. The authors provide quality metrics used to evaluate the performance of the compression algorithms. They also introduce the modern technique of compressed sensing, which retains the most important part of the signal while it is being sensed.
