Literary Studies In Reconstruction

by Marko Juvan, Literary Studies In Reconstruction Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Literary Studies In Reconstruction books, The identity and relevance of literary studies require a conceptual and institutional reconstruction in response to the global reshaping and commodification of knowledge. The author thus proposes a theory of literary discourse and literary history that take into account literariness as an important socio-cultural phenomenon and revisits several critical concepts, such as world literature, literary text, genre, style, fiction, literary space, and cultural memory.

Reconstruction In Literary Studies

by Bryan Vescio, Reconstruction In Literary Studies Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Reconstruction In Literary Studies books, Pointing the way toward a revitalized future for the study of literature, Reconstruction in Literary Studies draws on philosophical pragmatism to justify the academic study of literature. Bryan Vescio repositions the discipline by conceiving of it not as an intrinsic good that needs no justification nor as an insidious ruse designed to perpetuate social inequality but as an institution with a distinctive, positive social function. Joining an urgent debate, Vescio argues that the institution of literary study within the university creates an environment of interpretive and methodological pluralism where scholars and students can develop and discuss their idiosyncratic individuality, thereby helping to maintain the productive diversity required to sustain a democratic culture. Satisfied neither with the profession's restrictive past nor with its increasingly stagnant present, this book points the way toward a revitalized future for the study of literature.

Worlding A Peripheral Literature

by Marko Juvan, Worlding A Peripheral Literature Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Worlding A Peripheral Literature books, Bringing together the analyses of the literary world-system, translation studies, and the research of European cultural nationalism, this book contests the view that texts can be attributed global importance irrespective of their origin, language, and position in the international book market. Focusing on Slovenian literature, almost unknown to world literature studies, this book addresses world literature’s canonical function in the nineteenth-century process of establishing European letters as national literatures. Aware of their dependence on imperial powers, (semi)peripheral national movements sought international recognition through, among other things, the newly invented figure of the national poet. Writers central to dependent national communities were canonized to represent their respective cultures to the norm-giving Other – the emerging world literary canon and its aesthetic ideology. Hence, national literatures asserted their linguo-cultural individuality through the process of worlding; that is, by their positioning in the international literary world informed by the supposed universality of the aesthetic.

Literary Studies Deconstructed

by Catherine Butler, Literary Studies Deconstructed Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Literary Studies Deconstructed books, Literary Studies Deconstructed critiques the state of Literary Studies in the modern university and argues for its comprehensive reconstruction. It argues that Literary Studies as currently practised avoids engaging with much of literary experience and prioritises instead the needs of critics as a professional community: to teach and assess students, to demonstrate the creation of knowledge, and to meet the demands of governments, funders and other bodies. The result is that many areas centrally important to lay readers are largely omitted from critical discussion. Moreover, critical writing and its conventions are framed so as to mask and repress the subject’s contradictions. This lively and provocative book will be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students with an interest in the critical profession or literary theory, as well as to Literary Studies academics.
