Who S Afraid Of Postmodernism The Church And Postmodern Culture

by James K. A. Smith, Who S Afraid Of Postmodernism The Church And Postmodern Culture Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Who S Afraid Of Postmodernism The Church And Postmodern Culture books, The philosophies of French thinkers Derrida, Lyotard, and Foucault form the basis for postmodern thought and are seemingly at odds with the Christian faith. However, James K. A. Smith claims that their ideas have been misinterpreted and actually have a deep affinity with central Christian claims. Each chapter opens with an illustration from a recent movie and concludes with a case study considering recent developments in the church that have attempted to respond to the postmodern condition, such as the "emerging church" movement. These case studies provide a concrete picture of how postmodern ideas can influence the way Christians think and worship. This significant book, winner of a Christianity Today 2007 Book Award, avoids philosophical jargon and offers fuller explanation where needed. It is the first book in the Church and Postmodern Culture series, which provides practical applications for Christians engaged in ministry in a postmodern world.

The Cinematic Novel And Postmodern Pop Fiction

by Décio Torres Cruz, The Cinematic Novel And Postmodern Pop Fiction Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Cinematic Novel And Postmodern Pop Fiction books, Décio Torres Cruz approaches connections between literature and cinema partly through issues of gender and identity, and partly through issues of reality and representation. In doing so, he looks at the various ways in which people have thought of the so-called cinematic novel, tracing the development of that genre concept not only in the French ciné-roman and film scenarios but also in novels from the United States, England, France, and Latin America. The main tendency he identifies is the blending of the cinematic novel with pop literature, through allusions to Pop Art and other postmodern cultural trends. His prime exhibits are a number of novels by the Argentinian writer Manuel Puig: Betrayed by Rita Hayworth; Heartbreak Tango; The Buenos Aires Affair; Kiss of the Spider Woman; and Pubis angelical. Bringing in suggestive sociocultural and psychoanalytical considerations, Cruz shows how, in Puig’s hands, the cinematic novel resulted in a pop collage of different texts, films, discourses, and narrative devices which fused reality and imagination into dream and desire.

Pentecostal And Postmodern Hermeneutics

by Bradley Truman Noel, Pentecostal And Postmodern Hermeneutics Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Pentecostal And Postmodern Hermeneutics books, Pentecostal and Postmodern seeks to explore the relationship between Pentecostal hermeneutics and Pentecostalism's ability to connect with and evangelize North American youth. As as Postmodern ethos makes its presence increasingly felt in the Western world. no Christian movement should be better positioned to bring the message of Christ to youth adn young adults eager to experience the God of Miracles and wonders. Recent trends in Pentecostal hermeneutics, however, may actually make the task more difficult. No historical movement has thrived in th long term that has not carefully considered the vision for the forefront of youth ministry in the last several decades, we must also connect Pentecostal academia with evangelism efforts among youth and young adults. This work calls Pentecostal scholars to thoughtfully consider the mplications of their work for future generations.

Postmodernist Intertextuality In David Mitchell S Cloud Atlas

by Martina Hrubes, Postmodernist Intertextuality In David Mitchell S Cloud Atlas Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Postmodernist Intertextuality In David Mitchell S Cloud Atlas books, Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Frankfurt (Main) (Institut für England- und Amerikastudien), 86 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The title of this study is “Postmodernist Intertextuality in David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas” and is based on the following hypotheses: 1. There is a particular kind of intertextuality specific to postmodernist literature that differs from previous uses of intertextual references. 2. Postmodernist intertextuality is deconstructive, self-reflexive and critical of Western hegemonic discourses and metanarratives. 3. This specific kind of intertextuality is a key element of postmodernist art. The first part of this work is going to outline some of the social and historical developments that have been associated with the postmodern condition and the rise of new art forms which respond to these changes. Lyotard’s description of postmodernity as an age that is marked by its profound “incredulity toward metanarratives” (The Postmodern Condition: A Report on Knowledge xxiv) is of particular significance to this study, especially his critique of the so-called “Enlightenment narrative” (xxiii) with its humanist values. This definition helps understand the interaction between postmodern theory and postmodernist art which are both directed against the same universalist assumptions. In the second part of this study, the concept of postmodernist intertextuality is applied to David Mitchell's novel Cloud Atlas.

The Cross Is Not Enough

by Ross Clifford, The Cross Is Not Enough Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Cross Is Not Enough books, If Christ had not risen from the dead, if God's plan for redemption had ended at the cross, what would our faith look like? Have we become so fixated on the cross that we have lost an understanding of the centrality of the resurrection? And if we ignore the resurrection, what effect does that have on our worldview, our evangelism, and our Christian practice? In The Cross Is Not Enough, Ross Clifford and Philip Johnson explore how the resurrection of Christ has been understood in times past and restore this linchpin doctrine to its rightful place as the basis of our hope, our worldview, and the way we live our lives. They compare Christianity's unique understanding of resurrection to other world religions and explore why the resurrection connects so readily with the human psyche. Pastors, teachers, students, and anyone involved in ministry will benefit from this insightful and engaging treatment of Christianity's most important doctrine.
