Political Communication And Deliberation

by John Gastil, Political Communication And Deliberation Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Political Communication And Deliberation books, The act of deliberation is the act of reflecting carefully on a matter and weighing the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to a problem. It aims to arrive at a decision or judgment based not only on facts and data but also on values, emotions, and other less technical considerations. Though a solitary individual can deliberate, it more commonly means making decisions together, as a small group, an organization, or a nation. Political Communication and Deliberation takes a unique approach to the field of political communication by viewing key concepts and research through the lens of deliberative democratic theory. This is the first text to argue that communication is central to democratic self-governance primarily because of its potential to facilitate public deliberation. Thus, it offers political communication instructors a new perspective on familiar topics, and it provides those teaching courses on political deliberation with their first central textbook. This text offers students practical theory and experience, teaching them skills and giving them a more direct understanding of the various subtopics in public communication.

Social Cognition And Communication

by Joseph P. Forgas, Social Cognition And Communication Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Social Cognition And Communication books, Language is the essence of interpersonal behavior and social relationships, and it is social cognitive processes that determine how we produce and understand language. However, there has been surprisingly little interest in the past linking social cognition and communication. This book presents the latest cutting-edge research from a select group of leading international scholars investigating the how language shapes our thinking, and how social cognitive processes in turn influence language production and communication. The chapters represent diverse perspectives of investigating the links between language and communication, including evolutionary, linguistic, cognitive and affective approaches as well as the empirical analysis of written and spoken narratives. New methodologies are presented including the latest techniques of text analysis to illuminate the psychology of individual language users, and entire cultures and societies. The chapters address such questions as how are cognitive and identity processes reflected in language? How do affective states influence language production? Are political correctness norms in language use effective? How do partners manage to accommodate to each other’s communicative expectations? What is the role of language as a medium of interpersonal and intergroup influence? How are individual and cultural identities reflected in, and shaped by narratives in literature, school texts and the media? The book is aimed at all students, researchers and laypersons interested in the interplay between thinking and communication, and should be required reading for all professionals who use language in their everyday work to interact with people.

Political Linguistics

by Jan Blommaert, Political Linguistics Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Political Linguistics books, As of Volume 9 (1994/95) John Benjamins Publishing Company is the official publisher of the Belgian Journal of Linguistics, the annual publication of the Linguistic Society of Belgium. Each volume is topical and includes selected papers from the international meetings organised by the LSB. After a programmatic introduction by Jan Blommaert, three sections can be discerned in this volume. The first section, with papers by van Dijk, Cushing, Wilson, Fairclough & Mauranen, Jucker and Gruber, concerns itself with the definition of political discourse, with particular linguistic aspects such as non-modal meaning, persuasive tactics or metalinguistic negation, and with recent trends of political discourse such as conversationalisation. The paper by Gruber on media coverage of right-wing extremism leads the way to the second section in which the media and political discourse on foreigners such as migrants and refugees is analysed (Kuusisto & Östman; Horvat, Verschueren & Zagar). Finally, the third section could be broadly labelled as concerned with 'self- and other-representation', with papers on intercultural discouse, gender, institutional discourse, varieties of English and political correctness (resp. Shi-xu, Rojo, Slembrouck & Sarangi, Begum & Kandiah, Janicki).
