Indigenous Australia And The Unfinished Business Of Theology

by Jione Havea, Indigenous Australia And The Unfinished Business Of Theology Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Indigenous Australia And The Unfinished Business Of Theology books, Indigenous Australia has on the one hand been romanticized and patronized, and on the other hand been avoided and ignored, in colonial, contextual and indigenous theologies. Indigenous Australia and the Unfinished Business of Theology consequently enters into (and invites ongoing) engagement with theological and cultural topics at the intersections of Indigeneity, Church, Colonization, Settlement, Mission, Apology, Reconciliation, Hermeneutics, Migration, and more. The book begins by drawing attention to the ongoing colonization of Australia, and to the rich wisdoms of Indigenous Australians which non-Indigenous people have not begun to respect, learn and appreciate. The remaining chapters are by non-Indigenous people who critically engage with some of the impacts and blind-spots of colonial, missionary, settler and migrant cultures. Together, the multidisciplinary contributors read and engage with indigenous heritages, arts, memories, and stories, as well as the policies and practices of Australian governments and churches.

Postcolonial Voices From Downunder

by Jione Havea, Postcolonial Voices From Downunder Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Postcolonial Voices From Downunder books, How do indigenous matters inform, irritate and advance postcolonial theologies and postcolonial biblical criticisms? What options emerge from confronting readings of religious, customary, scriptural, political and cultural texts, traditions, leanings, bodies and anxieties? These two questions epitomize the concerns that the contributors address in this collection. The postcolonial voices that come together between the covers of this book show that indigenous subjects and heritages do matter in the theological and hermeneutical business, for we all have something to learn from First Peoples, and that theologians and biblical critics have much to gain from (and offer to) confronting and troubling traditional views and fears. Together in this book, the postcolonial voices from Downunder (geographically: Oceania, Pasifika; ideologically: marginalized, minoritized) confront political and religious bodies, including Christian churches, on account of their participation in and justification of the occupation and poaching of native lands, wisdom, wealth, and titles. This book is for First Peoples and Second Peoples, whether they are down under or up yonder, who are curious about possible advents of postcolonial theologies and postcolonial biblical criticisms in the future.

Grounded In The Body In Time And Place In Scripture

by Jill Firth, Grounded In The Body In Time And Place In Scripture Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Grounded In The Body In Time And Place In Scripture books, “In my bibliographies there are no women in the evangelical tradition, and no Australian women scholars.” This unique volume addresses this gap, with eighteen biblically rich and academically rigorous chapters by established and emerging Australian women scholars in the evangelical tradition. The authors consider our relationship with the land and Indigenous peoples, neighborhood, embodiment, (dis)ability, abortion, leadership, work, architecture, the media, Song of Songs and domestic violence, and Jeremiah and weaponized rape, and demonstrate recent methodologies such as a social identity reading of Exodus, sensory readings of Psalms and John’s Gospel, and discipleship readings of Mary and Martha and the woman at the well. A contemporary Kriol psalm and stories of pioneering Australian women theological students and teachers complete the volume. Valuable for students and teachers across Bible, theology, ministry, and practice subjects, this book is an essential inclusion in any theological library.

Enacting A Public Theology

by Clive Pearson, Enacting A Public Theology Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Enacting A Public Theology books, The practice of a public theology is to identify issues that require attention for the sake of a civil society and the flourishing of all. In diverse ways the writers of Enacting a Public Theology recognise that the present is a volatile moment in time. The publication explores the loss of confidence in the contemporary expressions of democracy; the climate emergency accompanies the dawn of the Anthropocene; the migration of people raises concerns to do with identity, belonging and where is home; the invasion of land wrongly described as terra nullius and then invaded demands a deepened praxis of reconciliation between first and second peoples; and lastly there is an urgent need to speak into the situation of those pushed to the margins because of HIV/Aids. Enacting a Public Theology represents the thinking of writers from Australia and Aotearoa-New Zealand. It is both local and global in its concern. Each one of the contributors participated in the triennial gathering of the Global Network of Public Theology held in Stellenbosch in 2016.

Bible And Theology From The Underside Of Empire

by Vuyani Vellem, Bible And Theology From The Underside Of Empire Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Bible And Theology From The Underside Of Empire books, ?Empire? has become an apt label to name the present horizon of global life and is associated with logic and practices which threaten human life in myriad ways. These reflections not only expose the true nature of empire, but suggest an alternative vision of flourishing wrought by God?s kingdom. In a creative and imaginative manner the contributions highlight new liberative possibilities for life through non-conventional Bible reading. The authors display a sensitive moral antenna for the oppressive manifestations of empire, and courageously intimate a new paradigm for Christian mission and public witness today. This book contains inspiring intersections of contextual Bible reading with impressing stories ÿabout people at the margins in all continents, complemented by prayers, poems and literature. Ideal for Bible study leaders working with marginalized people but also with middle class Christians who can learn to read the Bible from the underside of history and act for justice.

Religion And Non Religion Among Australian Aboriginal Peoples

by James L. Cox, Religion And Non Religion Among Australian Aboriginal Peoples Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Religion And Non Religion Among Australian Aboriginal Peoples books, Offering a significant contribution to the emerging field of 'Non-Religion Studies', Religion and Non-Religion among Australian Aboriginal Peoples draws on Australian 2011 Census statistics to ask whether the Indigenous Australian population, like the wider Australian society, is becoming increasingly secularised or whether there are other explanations for the surprisingly high percentage of Aboriginal people in Australia who state that they have 'no religion'. Contributors from a range of disciplines consider three central questions: How do Aboriginal Australians understand or interpret what Westerners have called 'religion'? Do Aboriginal Australians distinguish being 'religious' from being 'non-religious'? How have modernity and Christianity affected Indigenous understandings of 'religion'? These questions re-focus Western-dominated concerns with the decline or revival of religion, by incorporating how Indigenous Australians have responded to modernity, how modernity has affected Indigenous peoples' religious behaviours and perceptions, and how variations of response can be found in rural and urban contexts.

Conflict Transformation And Reconciliation

by Sarah Maddison, Conflict Transformation And Reconciliation Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Conflict Transformation And Reconciliation books, This book examines approaches to reconciliation and peacebuilding in settler colonial, post-conflict, and divided societies. In contrast to current literature, this book provides a broader assessment of reconciliation and conflict transformation by applying a distinctive ‘multi-level’ approach. The analysis provides a unique intervention in the field, one that significantly complicates received notions of reconciliation and transitional justice, and considers conflict transformation across the constitutional, institutional, and relational levels of society. Drawing on extensive fieldwork in South Africa, Northern Ireland, Australia, and Guatemala, the work presents an interdisciplinary study of the complex political challenges facing societies attempting to transition either from violence and authoritarianism to peace and democracy, or from colonialism to post-colonialism. Informed by theories of agonistic democracy, the book conceives of reconciliation as a process that is deeply political, and that prioritises the capacity to retain and develop democratic political contest in societies that have, in other ways, been able to resolve their conflicts. The cases considered suggest that reconciliation is most likely an open-ended process rather than a goal — a process that requires divided societies to pay ongoing attention to reconciliatory efforts at all levels, long after the eyes of the world have moved on from countries where the work of reconciliation is thought to be finished. This book will be of great interest to students of reconciliation, conflict transformation, peacebuilding, transitional justice and IR in general.
