Gaining Ground

by Jennifer A. Clack, Gaining Ground Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Gaining Ground books, Around 370 million years ago, a distant relative of a modern lungfish began a most extraordinary adventure—emerging from the water and laying claim to the land. Over the next 70 million years, this tentative beachhead had developed into a worldwide colonization by ever-increasing varieties of four-limbed creatures known as tetrapods, the ancestors of all vertebrate life on land. This new edition of Jennifer A. Clack's groundbreaking book tells the complex story of their emergence and evolution. Beginning with their closest relatives, the lobe-fin fishes such as lungfishes and coelacanths, Clack defines what a tetrapod is, describes their anatomy, and explains how they are related to other vertebrates. She looks at the Devonian environment in which they evolved, describes the known and newly discovered species, and explores the order and timing of anatomical changes that occurred during the fish-to-tetrapod transition.

by Deborah James, Gaining Ground Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Gaining Ground books, Gaining Ground? Rights and Property in South African Land Reform examines how land reform policy and practice in post-apartheid South Africa have been produced and contested. Set in the province of Mpumalanga, the book gives an ethnographic account of local initiatives and conflicts, showing how the poorest sectors of the landless have defied the South African state's attempts to privatize land holdings and create a new class of African farmers. They insist that the 'rights-based' rather than the 'market-driven' version of land reform should prevail and that land restitution was intended to benefit all Africans. However their attempts to gain land access often backfire. Despite state assurances that land reform would benefit all, illegal land selling and 'brokering' are pervasive, representing one of the only feasible routes to land access by the poor. This book shows how human rights lawyers, NGOs and the state, in interaction with local communities, have tried to square these symbolic and economic claims on land. Winner of the inaugural Elliott P. Skinner Book Award of the Association of Africanist Anthropology, 2008

by Gail Fondahl, Gaining Ground Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Gaining Ground books, For indigenous people, land is a critical determinant to cultural survival. the indigenous people of the Russian North currently struggle to gain greater control over their homelands against a backdrop of state reforms regarding land privatization, political devolution and the renegotiation of state-aboriginal relations. This book recounts the experiences of one group, the Evenkis of Transbaykalia (southeastern Siberia) in implementing indigenous land reform in the Russian Federation.KEY TOPICS: After examining "traditional" Evanki land tenure practice, this book recounts the dispossession of land from the Evenkis of Transbaykalia during the Tsarist and Soviet periods. It then looks at the successes and obstacles that Evanki villagers identify in their recent efforts to reassert control over their native land. Based on fieldwork over the course of three years, the book incorporates the views of numerous Evenki individuals on a "land claims" process which has endangered both optimism and frustration.
