From Oxford To The Okavango

by Thomas J. Larson, From Oxford To The Okavango Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download From Oxford To The Okavango books, World explorer Tom Larson is off on another grand adventure this time with his wife and three small children! First they go to Woodstock, England while he studies for his MLitt degree at Oxford, then they are off to Johannesburg, South Africa where Larson has a teaching position at the Witwatersrand University. During vacations he goes to Botswana to continue studies of the Hambukushu people he started in 1950. There is never a dull moment for the Larson family or the reader as the story moves from their lovely home "The Cardinal1s Hat" near stately Blenheim Palace Park in England to native African outposts in the vast, wild Okavango River delta country of Southern Africa. This book is an amazing read! Alec Campbell of Botswana states: "Tom is an old time indefatigable explorer who still works on his enormous accumulation of data, lectures to students, and who still works at research in the Society Islands of French Polynesia."

by John Henry Cardinal Newman, Fifteen Sermons Preached Before The University Of Oxford Between A D 1826 And 1843 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Fifteen Sermons Preached Before The University Of Oxford Between A D 1826 And 1843 books, These remarkable sermons by John Henry Newman (1801-1890) were first published at Oxford in 1843, two years before he was received into the Roman Catholic Church. Published here in its entirety is the third edition of 1872 for which Newman added an additional sermon, bracketed notes, and, importantly, a comprehensive, condensed Preface. In her introduction, noted Newman scholar Mary Katherine Tillman considers the volume as an integral whole, showing how all of the sermons systematically relate to the central theme of the faith-reason relationship.

The Oxford Handbook Of The Oxford Movement

by Stewart J. Brown, The Oxford Handbook Of The Oxford Movement Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Oxford Handbook Of The Oxford Movement books, The Oxford Handbook of the Oxford Movement reflects the rich and diverse nature of scholarship on the Oxford Movement and provides pointers to further study and new lines of enquiry. Part I considers the origins and historical context of the Oxford Movement. These chapters include studies of the legacy of the seventeenth-century 'Caroline Divines' and of the nature and influence of the eighteenth and early nineteenth-century High Church movement within the Church of England. Part II focuses on the beginnings and early years of the Oxford Movement, paying particular attention to the people, the distinctive Oxford context, and the ecclesiastical controversies that inspired the birth of the Movement and its early intellectual and religious expressions. In Part III the theme shifts from early history of the Oxford Movement to its distinctive theological developments. This section analyses Tractarian views of religious knowledge and the notion of 'ethos'; the distinctive Tractarian views of tradition and development; and Tractarian ecclesiology, including ideas of the via media and the 'branch theory' of the Church. The years of crisis for the Oxford Movement between 1841 and 1845, including John Henry Newman's departure from the Church of England, are covered in Part IV. Part V then proceeds to a consideration of the broader cultural expressions and influences of the Oxford Movement. Part VI focuses on the world outside England and examines the profound impact of the Oxford Movement on Churches beyond the English heartland, as well as on the formation of a world-wide Anglicanism. In Part VII, the contributors show how the Oxford Movement remained a vital force in the twentieth century, finding expression in the Anglo-Catholic Congresses and in the Prayer Book Controversy of the 1920s within the Church of England. The Handbook draws to a close, in Part VIII, with a set of more generalised reflections on the impact of the Oxford Movement, including chapters on the judgement of the converts to Roman Catholicism over the Movement's loss of its original character, on the spiritual life and efforts of those who remained within the Anglican Church to keep Tractarian ideas alive, on the engagement of the Movement with Liberal Protestantism and Liberal Catholicism, and on the often contentious historiography of the Oxford Movement which continued to be a source of church party division as late as the centennial commemorations of the Movement in 1933. An 'Afterword' chapter assesses the continuing influence of the Oxford Movement in the world Anglican Communion today, with special references to some of the conflicts and controversies that have shaken Anglicanism since the 1960s.

The Oxford Movement In Practice

by George Herring, The Oxford Movement In Practice Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Oxford Movement In Practice books, From its inception what came to be known as the Oxford Movement was always intended to be more than just an abstruse dialogue about the theoretical nature of Anglicanism. Instead, it was meant to spread its ideas not only through college common rooms, but also bishop's palaces, and above all the parsonages of the Church of England. The Oxford Movement in Practice presents an analysis of Tractarianism in the generation after Newman's conversion to Roman Catholicism. While much scholarly work has been done on the Oxford Movement between 1833 and 1845, and on a number of specific individuals or aspects of the Movement after this period, this work adopts a different approach. It examines Tractarianism in the parochial setting, and charts the development of the Movement through its influence on the parishes of the Church of England. George Herring offers detailed explanation of the development of ritualism in the 1860's, and shows how the Ritualists diverted the course the Movement had been taking from 1845.
