Everyday Talk

by Karen Tracy, Everyday Talk Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Everyday Talk books, Learning how to listen to and analyze talk is fundamental to understanding human communication. This engaging text examines how the "little stuff" of everyday conversation--what we say and how we say it, the terms we use to refer to others, the content and style of stories we tell, and myriad other factors--expresses both who we are and who we want to be. The book draws on discourse analytic research and applies it to a wide range of real-life situations and examples, including private conversations among friends and family as well as interchanges in the classroom, workplace, and public settings. Interweaving rhetorical and cultural perspectives, the author gives particular attention to the ways talk reflects communicators' cultural and social background, nationality, ethnicity, social class, and gender, as well as the dynamics between particular conversational partners. Illuminated is the complex role that talking plays in building relationships and creating--and hopefully, resolving--relational problems.

Grammar In Everyday Talk

by Sandra A. Thompson, Grammar In Everyday Talk Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Grammar In Everyday Talk books, Drawing on everyday telephone and video interactions, this book surveys how English speakers use grammar to formulate responses in ordinary conversation. The authors show that speakers build their responses in a variety of ways: the responses can be longer or shorter, repetitive or not, and can be uttered with different intonational 'melodies'. Focusing on four sequence types: responses to questions ('What time are we leaving?' - 'Seven'), responses to informings ('The May Company are sure having a big sale' - 'Are they?'), responses to assessments ('Track walking is so boring. Even with headphones' - 'It is'), and responses to requests ('Please don't tell Adeline' - 'Oh no I won't say anything'), they argue that an interactional approach holds the key to explaining why some types of utterances in English conversation seem to have something 'missing' and others seem overly wordy.

Bad News Good News

by Douglas W. Maynard, Bad News Good News Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Bad News Good News books, When we share or receive good or bad news, from ordinary events such as the birth of a child to public catastrophes such as 9/11, our "old" lives come to an end, and suddenly we enter a new world. In Bad News, Good News, Douglas W. Maynard explores how we tell and hear such news, and what's similar and different about our social experiences when the tidings are bad rather than good or vice versa. Uncovering vocal and nonvocal patterns in everyday conversations, clinics, and other organizations, Maynard shows practices by which people give and receive good or bad news, how they come to realize the news and their new world, how they suppress or express their emotions, and how they construct social relationships through the sharing of news. He also reveals the implications of his study for understanding public affairs in which transmitting news may influence society at large, and he provides recommendations for professionals and others on how to deliver bad or good tidings more effectively. For anyone who wants to understand the interactional facets of news delivery and receipt and their social implications, Bad News, Good News offers a wealth of scholarly insights and practical advice.

Conversational Joking

by Neal R. Norrick, Conversational Joking Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Conversational Joking books, All of us inject puns, jokes, and wisecracks into our talk. This book investigates these and other forms of humor that enliven everyday conversation, examining the ways humor helps us break the ice, fill awkward silences, smooth the way for requests, and build group solidarity. Norrick demonstrates that an account of joking is a necessary part of any complete description of conversation. At the same time, he shows that conversation is the natural home of many forms of humor. We can understand these only if we can explain why and how they are used in everyday talk. Norrick's close study of joking provides new insights into both verbal humor and the nature of conversation. Conversational Joking builds on recent developments in discourse analysis and linguistic pragmatics, and on current work in the study of humor, narrative, and social interaction. It provides a coherent perspective on conversational joking and makes a major contribution to our understanding of humor, conversation, and face-to-face interaction.

Barbershops Bibles And Bet

by Melissa Victoria Harris-Lacewell, Barbershops Bibles And Bet Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Barbershops Bibles And Bet books, What is the best way to understand black political ideology? Just listen to the everyday talk that emerges in public spaces, suggests Melissa Harris-Lacewell. And listen this author has--to black college students talking about the Million Man March and welfare, to Southern, black Baptists discussing homosexuality in the church, to black men in a barbershop early on a Saturday morning, to the voices of hip-hop music and Black Entertainment Television. Using statistical, experimental, and ethnographic methods Barbershops, Bibles, and B.E.T offers a new perspective on the way public opinion and ideologies are formed at the grassroots level. The book makes an important contribution to our understanding of black politics by shifting the focus from the influence of national elites in opinion formation to the influence of local elites and people in daily interaction with each other. Arguing that African Americans use community dialogue to jointly develop understandings of their collective political interests, Harris-Lacewell identifies four political ideologies that constitute the framework of contemporary black political thought: Black Nationalism, Black Feminism, Black Conservatism and Liberal Integrationism. These ideologies, the book posits, help African Americans to understand persistent social and economic inequality, to identify the significance of race in that inequality, and to devise strategies for overcoming it.
