Education And The State

by E. G. West, Education And The State Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Education And The State books, Education and the State first appeared in 1965 and was immediately hailed as one of the century's most important works on education. In the thirty years that followed, the questions this book raised concerning state-run education have grown immeasurably in urgency and intensity. Education and the State re-examines the role of government in education and challenges the fundamental statist assumption that the state is best able to provide an education for the general population. West explores the views on education of the nineteenth-century British reformers and classical economists who argued the necessity of state education. He demonstrates that by the Foster Act of 1870 the state system of education was superimposed upon successful private efforts, thereby suppressing an emerging and increasingly robust structure of private, voluntary, and competitive education funded by families, churches, and philanthropies. This new and expanded edition of Education and the State addresses the American situation in education, applying the lessons learned from the study of British institutions. It also broadens their application from education to the conduct of democracy as a political system. Edwin G. West was Professor Emeritus of Economics at Carleton University, Ottawa.

Higher Education And The State

by Melvin H. Bernstein, Higher Education And The State Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Higher Education And The State books, Connections between higher education and state governments to promote economic development are discussed, including a regional economic development project in New England, and four partnerships between higher education and the state in Georgia, Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. International examples from France, Great Britain, Russia, and China are also briefly considered. Federal aid for a regional pilot project to the New England Board of Higher Education is designed to inform legislators about the significance of higher education to state economies and the region, and to better prepare legislators to make more informed judgments on issues concerning investment in human capital. Other programs of note are: the Ben Franklin Partnership in Pennsylvania, which focuses on the use of new technologies in basic industries; Georgia's Industrial Extension Service, which provides technical information to counties and companies; the Bay State Skills Corporation in Massachusetts, which provides job training; and Iowa's Industrial New Jobs Training Program for business and industry. Appended is "The Public Investment in Higher Education," a policy briefing report for legslators from Vermont. Approaches for improving the quality of information provided to legislatures include: annual performance report, better communication, informed public debate, and information on state research expenditures per faculty member. Parents Education And The State

by Cedric Cullingford, Parents Education And The State Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Parents Education And The State books, The role of parents in the education system is crucial and increasingly recognised as being so, not only by teachers, but by parents themselves and politicians. Parents are seen to have an influential part to play in support of schools and are also asked to take a more controlling role. This book examines the reality of parents' place in the education system: How important is their contribution? What do they think of it? What do teachers and children think of this? What kind of impact do parents have on the academic and social futures of their children? And what do parents think about the political changes? This book brings together original research and distinguished contributors to deal with important issues. It analyses what is going on based on empirical evidence from parents, children and teachers, and draws out the political implications.
