In this two year project, five middle school language arts teachers participated in a collaborative inquiry that was loosely based on the Japanese lesson study model for teacher professional development. In their modified lesson study, teachers selected topics to investigate in teaching and learning writing. They collaboratively designed various lessons that addressed selected topics, observed each other deliver the lessons, debriefed and revised the lessons, selected new topics, and repeated the cycle over the course of two years. Each of the participating teachers had been involved in a local affiliate of the National Writing Project (NWP) either as a teacher consultant or a workshop participant. In an effort to extend their NWP experiences, participants sought a professional learning community to further develop their writing pedagogy across their five culturally, linguistically, economically, and geographically diverse middle school classrooms. Through a situated learning theory lens, this research focused on the collaborative activities and generative outcomes that were afforded by the lesson study process. Findings are detailed in the following three themes: (a) in their collaborative activities, participating teachers introduced a wide variety of resources that reflected varied instructional approaches to teaching and learning writing. They developed a shared interest in establishing "theoretical equilibrium," a balance between contrasting methods and purposes for teaching writing. The collaborative processes in which participants negotiated theoretical equilibrium fostered shifts in teachers' perceptions of their student' abilities and encouraged participants to develop more challenging, higher-order writing instruction. (b) Generative outcomes from the lesson study included participants' sustained inquiry-based practices beyond the lesson study and into their individual teaching. Generative outcomes also included two participants' ongoing efforts to define equity in their writing instruction. (c) Findings from this study suggest that a participant- modified professional development model, which is responsive to the needs and interests of participating teachers, may inspire the types of collaborative activities and generative outcomes that foster the development of a more challenging pedagogy, equity-oriented perspectives, and a sustained inquiry-based practice.
