Download Chaucer At Large books, Offered as part of the sexcentenary commemoration of Chaucer's death, this very readable study examines Chaucer's impact on the academic and non-academic worlds of the 19th and 20th centuries. Chronological chapters assess Chaucer's impact on the Pre-Raphaelites, on W B Yeats, on Edwardian children's stories and on post-World War One authors. Ellis also considers modern translations and contrasts the relationship between academia's interest in Chaucer and his representation in the media and in historical fiction since the Second World War.

Chaucer As Children S Literature

by Velma Bourgeois Richmond, Chaucer As Children S Literature Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Chaucer As Children S Literature books, Although Geoffrey Chaucer is the major author for Middle English studies, he often receives little notice in studies of children's literature. However, there is a fascinating relationship between Chaucer and children's interests. This book examines in detail Chaucer stories retold for children--both the texts and the illustrations, which are excellent examples of the verbal and visual storytelling that are very important in children's literature. The popularity of certain Chaucer stories, their adjustment for children, and the historical, political, educational, and social contexts of the retellings reveal Victorian and Edwardian attitudes. The author also considers how retellings of Chaucer stories contributed to the traditional view of Chaucer as the Father of English and how this view of him was developed at the turn of the twentieth century as part of an expansion of general education and English studies.

Chaucer S Afterlife

by Kathleen Forni, Chaucer S Afterlife Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Chaucer S Afterlife books, This study explores Chaucer's present-day cultural reputation by way of popular culture. In just the past two decades his texts have been adapted to a wide variety of popular genres, including television, stage, comic book, hip-hop, science fiction, horror, romance, and crime fiction. This cultural recycling involves a variety of functions but Chaucer's primary association is with the idea of pilgrimage and the prevailing tenor is populist satire. The target is not only cultural elitism but also the dominant discourse of professional Chaucerians. Academics in turn may have doubts about the value of popular Chaucer; popular culture theory, however, would maintain that such skepticism has less to do with critical discrimination than the assertion of social distinction. Nonetheless, the fact that Chaucer has a popular afterlife, and remains an ideological product over which competing groups lay claim, attests to his current cultural vitality.

Six Renaissance Men And Women

by Elisabeth Salter, Six Renaissance Men And Women Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Six Renaissance Men And Women books, The English Renaissance is frequently defined in the context of the Elizabethans and early-Stuarts, but here we focus on the early Renaissance, and the important cultural transitions of the late-medieval/early-Tudor period. In this innovative study, Elisabeth Salter reconstructs the lives and experiences of six men and women of the early Renaissance and leads us on a quest to reconstruct their lost cultural worlds. The six men and women are all figures from the margins of the royal courts during the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII: Gilbert Banaster, present at the court of Henry VII in the guise of writer and musician; The Anonymous Witness, spectator to the marriage of Prince Arthur and Katherine of Aragon; William Cornish, playwright and musician at Henry VIII's household; Elizabeth Philip, silk trader to the royal court; Dame Katherine Styles, whose biography is recreated through her will; and William Buckley, Educator and Schoolmaster to King Edward VI. Salter presents an exemplary model of how it is possible to reconstruct biography from sometimes fragmentary sources. The connections drawn between these six individuals display ample evidence for the cultural innovation and sophistication of these courts in terms of pageantry, music, the visual arts, fashions in luxury consumption, scientific discovery and literary invention. When all six lives are added together as a whole, the book will lead the reader to a richer understanding of the cultural context of the early English Renaissance.
