New Brazilian Gardens

by Roberto Silva, New Brazilian Gardens Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download New Brazilian Gardens books, An inspirational and insightful look at contemporary Brazilian garden design and the influence of famed designer Roberto Burle Marx. Brazilian Roberto Burle Marx was indisputably one of the greatest garden and landscape architects of the twentieth century. His projects, almost all of which were in his native country and highlighted its rich local flora, influenced gardens and landscapesand other design disciplinesaround the world. Given the richness of Brazil's great tradition of modernism and the lushness of its tropical landscape, it is perhaps only because of its distance that so little is known about contemporary gardening thereuntil now. Presenting over thirty new gardens and landscapes located across the country, from the coast to the hills, from the cities to the jungle, New Brazilian Gardens offers an exciting overview of current practice by designers who are hardly known outside its borders. The gardens are grouped into four sections: Water, Planting, Abstraction, and Sculpture. Each project is presented in detail, with descriptions, plans (including plant lists), and photographs. An introduction considers the evolution of the Brazilian garden since the Colonial period and examines Burle Marx's influence in the light of current trends. 267 color illustrations.

Roberto Burle Marx

by Lauro Cavalcanti, Roberto Burle Marx Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Roberto Burle Marx books, Roberto Burle Marx (Sao Paulo, 1909-Rio de Janeiro, 1994) is known as a landscape architect, but also as a painter, botanist, gardener, chef and jewellery designer. He considered the garden to be one of the fine arts, as "the adaptation of the biome to civilisation's natural requirements." This book introduces the realm of the full sensory experience. Burle Marx's work with plants becomes highly pictorial--everything is drawn, colored and constructed. In this symbiosis between aesthetics and botany, Burle Marx is the master of both species and spaces. His work is the embodiment of the "nature-city," a concept developed from the garden cities of the late 19th century, which has become compromised in the 21st century due to the compact city model. This new publication focuses on Burle Marx's scientific interest in the landscape and his relationship with the environment. Concepts that continue to be of major significance in contemporary landscape architecture, such as ecology, garden as an art form and landscape design in the urban structure, are some of the subjects the book deals with. The visual information of the book is complemented by the texts by Fares El-Dahdah, Francis Rambert, Jacques Leenhardt, Jose Tabacow, Lelia Coelho Frota, Andre Correa do Lago, Dorothee Imbert, Valerie Fraser and Gilles Clement.

Roberto Burle Marx

by Jens Hoffmann, Roberto Burle Marx Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Roberto Burle Marx books, An unprecedented look at the wide-ranging artistic work of one of the 20th century's most significant landscape architects The modernist parks and gardens of Brazilian landscape architect and garden designer Roberto Burle Marx (1909-1994) earned him awards, widespread acclaim, and international fame. Over a 60-year career, he designed more than 2,000 gardens worldwide, the most famous of which are those he created in collaboration with the architect Oscar Niemeyer for Brasília. Although he is best known for his landscape work, Burle Marx was a prolific artist in a variety of media, and his larger body of work--which includes paintings, drawings, tile mosaics, sculpture, textile design, jewelry, theater costumes, and more--is critical to understanding his importance as a modernist. An avid horticulturalist, he was among the first to denounce deforestation in the Amazon region; he also discovered over thirty species of Brazilian flora, which bear his name. This beautifully illustrated and groundbreaking publication covers the full range of Burle Marx's artistic output, as well as his remarkable home, an abandoned estate that he transformed into his office, workshop, gallery, and living space. The enduring influence of Burle Marx's work is also explored through interviews with seven contemporary artists: Juan Araujo, Paloma Bosquê, Dominique González-Foerster, Luisa Lambri, Arto Lindsay, Nick Mauss, and Beatriz Milhazes. These artists exemplify the extent to which his work continues to be a source of inspiration.

Depositions

by Catherine Seavitt Nordenson, Depositions Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Depositions books, “Burle Marx created a new and modern grammar for international landscape design.” —Lauro Cavalcanti, quoted in the New York Times “The real creator of the modern garden.” —American Institute of Architects Roberto Burle Marx (1909–1994) is internationally known as one of the preeminent modernist landscape architects. He designed renowned public landscapes in Brazil, beginning with small plazas in Recife in the 1930s and culminating with large public parks in the early 1960s, most significantly the Parque do Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro. Depositions explores a pivotal moment in Burle Marx’s career—the years in which he served as a member of the Federal Cultural Council created by the military dictatorship in the mid-1960s. Despite the inherent conflict and risk in working with the military regime, Burle Marx boldly used his position to advocate for the protection of the unique Brazilian landscape, becoming a prophetic voice of caution against the regime’s policies of rapid development and resource exploitation. Depositions presents the first English translation of eighteen environmental position pieces that Burle Marx wrote for the journal Cultura , a publication of the Brazilian Ministry of Education and Culture, from 1967 through 1973. Catherine Seavitt Nordenson introduces and contextualizes the depositions by analyzing their historical and political contexts, as well as by presenting pertinent examples of Burle Marx’s earlier public projects, which enables a comprehensive reading of the texts. Addressing deforestation, the establishment of national parks, the place of commemorative sculpture, and the unique history of the Brazilian cultural landscape, Depositions offers new insight into Burle Marx’s outstanding landscape oeuvre and elucidates his transition from prolific designer to prescient counselor.
