Professionalizing Medicine

by John M. Harris Jr., Professionalizing Medicine Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Professionalizing Medicine books, "As Dr. Harris demonstrates nicely, the roots of many of today's threats to medicine as a profession emerged in the 19th Century. James Reeves' story provides inspiration for today's professionals confronting challenges in caring for patients."—Herbert M. Swick, MD, former president, American Osler Society and former executive director, Institute of Medicine and Humanities "This well-written and deeply researched book explores the career of an extraordinary American physician, James Reeves. Though barely known today, Reeves was one of the most influential medical and public health leaders in the United States during the last third of the nineteenth century, a period of profound transition in American medical history. Professionalizing Medicine not only offers the first thorough account of Reeves's fascinating life story, but also recounts the ways in which Reeves's strong commitments helped create the professionalized medical system still in place today. And as Harris skillfully demonstrates, many of the ethical and structural issues that Reeves faced during his lifetime continue to reverberate into our own era."—James C. Mohr, CAS Distinguished Professor of History and Philip H. Knight Professor of Social Sciences Emeritus, University of Oregon, author of Licensed to Practice—The Supreme Court Defines the American Medical Profession. "This biography of James Edmund Reeves, whose legislative accomplishments cemented American physicians' control of the medical marketplace, illuminates landmarks of American health care: the troubled introduction of clinical epidemiology and development of botanic medicine and homeopathy, the Civil War's stimulation of sanitary science and hospital medicine, the rise of government involvement, the revolution in laboratory medicine, and the explosive growth of phony cures. It recounts the human side of medicine as well, including the management of untreatable diseases and the complex politics of medical practice and professional organizing. His life is reminder that while politics, economics, and science drive the societal trajectory of modern health care, moral decisions often determine its path.

Shenandoah Valley Folklife

by Scott Hamilton Suter, Shenandoah Valley Folklife Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Shenandoah Valley Folklife books, Bordered by the Blue Ridge and the Allegheny Mountains, the Shenandoah Valley forms a natural corridor to the western parts of Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Early American settlers followed the valley as one of the first routes westward. In Shenandoah Valley Folklife, Scott Hamilton Suter documents the many peoples who have left their marks on the folkways of the region--Native Americans, Germans, Swiss, Scots- Irish, and African Americans. His research reveals how the first settlers there built homes, how they worshiped, and how they passed on legends and musical traditions that continue to play a role in the community today. Throughout the book, Suter argues that the valley's past plays a definitive role in its present. He finds family traditions still thriving in crafts like white oak basketmaking, as well as in cooking and architecture. To illuminate the change and continuity in religious life, he focuses on Old Order Mennonites, the Church of the Brethren, and Baptists in the region. Using both historical sources and his own field work, Suter shows how folklife remains a powerful, resonant force in the Shenandoah, and how new immigrants are adapting and adding their own traditions to long-standing customs. Scott Hamilton Suter is curator of the Shenandoah Valley Folk Art & Heritage Center in Dayton, Virginia. He was a Senior Fulbright Scholar and University Fellow at The George Washington University and wrote "Tradition and Fashion: Cabinetmaking in the Upper Shenandoah Valley, 1850-1900" and has had articles in the "Folklore Historian" and the "Virginia Explorer."
